How to File a Police Report

The first thing you should do to file a police report is contact the police department in the city or town where the crime took place. This may seem obvious, but it's the most important step. Do this as soon as possible after the incident, so the details are fresh in your mind and you can provide the most accurate information to the police.

You can file a police report at the police station or request an officer come to your home and talk to you there if you're too upset to go to them. Be prepared to answer questions to the best of your knowledge including type of crime, items missing, anything stolen or damaged, the name of the person who committed the crime (if known), their address, vehicle type or plate, and a detailed description of the suspect.

The police officer will need your contact information so he/she can follow up with you if need be. Be sure to get the case number for your police report in the event you've forgotten any information, need to update your case, or if you need a copy of the police report for your records.

Tips for Filing a Report

There is no fee to file a police report, but there is one to obtain copies.

Some police jurisdictions allow you to file police reports online which can save you time. Contact your local police department to find out if they offer this service. This is advised for petty or less serious crimes. More serious crimes should be filed in person due to their nature.

It's a good idea to follow up with the officer who took your police report to see what happened with the case and if there is any additional information you can provide.

Never file a false police report. This is considered a crime that is punishable by law.
